hello guys and gals. We recently bought a 1972 johnson 100 engine (on a boat of course) the previous owner was not sure if it ran or not so we got a really good deal on it. Threw in a new battery and it turned right over. We wanted to know if this engine (its model is 100esl72r) was a 2 stroke or 4. and if we need to add oil directly to the gas or where the oil goes into or what ratio we need to have. another question is it doesn't look like our gas tank is even hooked up. the fuel door is in the front of the boat, but the fuel line coming from the engine goes to a little red 5 gallon-ish tank that sits 2 foot from the engine. can someone please tell us more about this engine? or where we can get more info without buying a manual. the boat is a 72 glaston swinger, if thats relevant.
thanks in advance,

well being the boat is a 1972, the built in tank could very well be shot. the tanks you are using is a portable tank. what was the norm, for that motor. it is a 2 stroke you use only TC-W3 outboard motor oil, and 87 octane fuel, at a ration of 50 parts fuel, 1 part oil. the motor is a hydro-electric shift lower unit. before using you need to put a water pump kit in it, or you will burn up the motor.

yes it does have a water pump already. trashdaddy is only looking out for your best insurance policy.you can buy a set of flushing muffs. put them on your garden hose then look for the line of holes that are on both sides of your lower unit.turn on the water and start the engine.but it sounds like you may be a little to new boating to install a water pump kit your self.you might want to take it to a marine repair shop.just to have it checked out.it's best in the long run.

To clarify -- the water pump impeller is a rubber paddle wheel type of affair. If you ran the engine without water that impeller gets extremely hot and can melt in a very short time. The engine either needs to be IN the water or the flushing muffs (look like ear muffs) must be used at the end of a garden hose to provide cooling water to the engine. Running any water cooled engine without water will damage it. Since you have no idea when it was changed last, it is in your best interest to change it now to ensure the engine cools properly. As pointed out, your engine is a two-stroke, it was built before oil injection systems were available so the oil must be mixed with the fuel in the fuel tank. There are many two stroke oils but in your case you need to look for the TCW3 label on the container. Do not use anything other than that.

Re: 72 johnson 100 questions.

haha, yea guys, i am new to boating. Ive been around cars, trucks, and motorcycles for ever though so i thought this shouldn't be too tough. I already have the ear muff looking things, so bonus on that. We have our gas/oil mix good. the engine will crank and crank but not start. There seems to be no spark coming from the coil. Is this normal. what needs to be done. the coil (says my dad) is grounded out somewhere and he wants to know more about the black box thingy on the back of the engine. we even hooked up a different coil (from a car) to the origional coil wires and it still had no spark. Ideas?
Also, where would i get a good deal on a water pump kit? I like ebay, but is there anywhere else that has these things and a reasonable price? Thanks again for everything guys!!!

update.
a few of the wires, and when i say a few i mean 3 or 4, happend to be broken. truely they looked like they were just cut, but they were under the wire wrap. we spliced them back together and the boat runs great!!!
once again guys, thanks a million!
