Wwlcome to iboats. :)

That motor has three things worthy of special attention. First is the pistons. They break easily if carbon builds-up in the ring grooves. Be religious about doing a de-carb annually.

Second, the ignition system is touchy. All it takes is a loose or corroded battery connection to blow the amplifier ($300+). Keep them clean and tight. Finger-tight wingnuts ain't good enough. Get out the pliers!

Third, it's electric shift. They're obsolete and what parts are still available are quite pricey. Use the right gearlube and don't let it get low or black.

Re: 72 johnson 125

Back in '72 I bought a 125 Johnny. Put it on a 17 1/2 trihull...trying to remember the name. (Just Did....Caravelle) Used it for 4 or 5 years and really used it, water skiing and fishing and all. Had 4 kids and we all liked to ski and fish.

Had zero problems and it ran out pretty good considering I had propped it for skiing....had a 13( ) x 17 (OMC SS)I think, or a 19; think it was a 17. Ran 39 with just me.

I remember on one occasion we were at a company picnic and just for fun we got 5 skiiers up with it. Took some work and didn't go very far before one fell off but we did it; 2 slaloms and 3 with doubles.

Sold it to a guy who overloaded it and ran it 40 miles up the intercoastal canal to a fishing hut. Burned a hole in the piston and some other things. That was not the fault of the engine. He was lugging it and running at WOT for an hour.

HTH

Mark

Re: 72 johnson 125

Yeah it did have a problem. It was cross-flow and was in love with the contents of the fuel tank. If you plan to do much running, get a looper. Won't regret it, especially with the current prices of gas.

Mark
