I had this out on the river two weeks ago and it ran pretty well. When I tried reverse,I had to hold the shift lever back to keep it engaged. This was a CL purchase and had water in l/u...not milky but separate from the oil. Water flowed out for a bit, then the blackish,foul-smelling oil. It was missing the washer on the vent screw. I filled it with 80/90 Quicksilver-Merc oil before I went out.

I only paid $225 for it and may not want to spend too much. Maybe a used l/u would be the way to go rather than a rebuild??

This is tiller control.

First check your shift linkage for any play. If that's okay, take the lower unit apart to see what's wrong before getting a used gear case.

What probably are going to find is that the previous owner turned the clutch dog around because it was jumping out of forward gear. Depending on whether or not the gears are shot too, you may be ok with a new clutch dog and seal kit. At least you will know what you have, whereas a used complete unit may be just as bad as the one you have.

Did you replace the vent screw and drain screw seals/washers upon refilling the gearcase?
