ok i have a 72 johnson 50hp, today i was going by the book and couldnt get it out of forward, have the spark plugs out cranking it over , so got on here found a thread , took the knife connecter off hooked a wire to a hot wire and cranked it over and il be danged 
it went into neutral, so connected green and blue and i have reverse, awsome! now, where do i look lol i took the shift toggle off and what a mess! wires split and connected different colored wires , looks like this is my problem but before i go trying to figure that out, what else should i check, and if it is in the toggle how will i know where to start, thanks for the help

ps i bought a manuel and it doesnt have alot of stuff on this motor, diagram wise, so any help would be great,
