I have a 1972 50 hp johnson that runs very rough idling. It stalls unless idling high. Today I ran it about 2 miles and as usual it ran very good above 1/2 speed. But returning it would never reach full speed. It seemed to be starved for fuel. I tried slightly closing the choke but it stalled. The low speed also runs like it is starved for fuel. I adjusted the low speed jets and it would level out perfectly but will only run about a minute before it stalls as if it runs out of fuel. The low speed jets can be adjusted to where the motor will run but it runs very irratic - a lot of jerking and smoking. After stalling it has to be choked to restart. The plugs have been replaced and they are correct. The carbs have be cleaned but I did not remove the plugs covering the low speed jets. I also haven't removed or inspected the leaf valves. The stator looks to be new but the coils are not new.

If you have the proper compression and spark, the problem would be fuel related. From what you've had to say, I would suspect that the carbs are fouled.

The carburetors must be completely dismantled, jets removed etc and cleaned thoroughly. There are no short cuts.
