72 johnson problem

I have a 72 johnson 65hp engine. Starts good and sound good, except whe you push the throttle into gear it just revs the engine up and does not go into gear, reverse does the same. Any thought?? <br />Thanks

it was working good, then it start to die and wouldn't idle, so I messed with the idle and the throttle cable(at the engine) It was the sprak plugs, now it idle fine. I moved the throttle cable back to the original position and the idle, now I am haveing this problem?? maybe this info will help <br />Thanks

Working on the throttle cable could have accidentally disconnected or misadjusted the shift cable.<br /><br />Good luck.
