Hello,

Last spring I purchased a 72' Larson Bowrider, 18', that had been sitting in a yard for two years. The boat was in very decent condition, and had a well running Johnson 150 GT on it. I got the boat for $1200. The hull looked good when I got it, as did everything else. The only thing I had noticed is the trailer setup didn't look too great, it had TWO slide boards (IDK the proper term for them, just 2x4's covered with carpet) to support the entire boat. Anyway, I got it all prepped to go out, made sure the motor was running nice. I got to the lake, put it in at the launch and everything seemed fine. So, I parked the truck and went back to find that water was up to the carpet in only about 2 minutes of being in the water. Found out that those slide boards had made two huge cracks in the hull that were PERFECTLY hidden.

So, I popped the floor to find out that the stringers were completely rotted out, and the foam soaked. I've taken out the floor/stringers/foam from the walk through window back, but I'm sure the front is in the same condition.

So here's my plan. I want to take the cap off, tear out the rest of the floor/stringers/foam, build new stringers after repairing the fiberglass, and put in new floor/foam. Oh, I forgot to mention, about the middle of the hull (length wise) there is about a 10" warp of the fiberglass.

SUGGESTIONS! I have not done such a huge repair before, I need all your knowledge kids! Everything from the repairs, pitfalls, how to setup my trailer better so this doesn't happen again, expenses....EVERYTHING!

Oh, here are some pics of my beautiful boat before it was torn apart.

Thanks,
Steve

Well when you get it completed the boat will be faster and perform better. All that give from rotten stringers and extra weight have cut your handling and performance back.

It will be well worth the effort.

Nice Boat!

Nice looking boat.

Sounds like you have a plan.
Big project. Just stay organized. Get one thing done at a time and move to the next. Have supplies/parts ready to go. It should go pretty smooth.

Don't forget to check the transom for rot also.

I'm kind of going through the same thing, except the only part of mine that needs to be replaced is under the bow rider. The thread on mine is the Replacing Floor under bow rider

Yeah, it really is a beautiful boat, I just hate to see it the way it is. It sucks too because I have no indoor space to work on it, and it's like 25 degrees out...but I'm gonna do as much as I can whenever I can.

What do you all think is the best way to pull that off the trailer? I was thinking just taking as much as I can out of it, pullin the motor off, and offloading it into my back yard with some blocks and wood to prop it up.

So, my first step of progress! I've decided since this is such a large project, to just set small, doable goals for myself. Todays goal was get the Johnson GT 150 off the transom and onto my garage floor. Which was no easy task in ten degree weather. I pulled the boat as far into my garage as it would go and got to work, eventually employing some help to set it on the floor. That things a beast.

Below are pictures of the boat currently....it used to be so beautiful.....

Sharp looking boat...it'll be a long, awful job. You will spend way more time than you think you will. You will figure out why they make new ones. But hang in there, it'll be worth it

I was able to clear some of the stuff out today and get the rub rail off, so, that's not bad progress for deciding yesterday just exactly what I was going to do with my boat.

About 500 of those I had to take out....that was fun.

Vintage, ugly seat.

A plate off the back of the transom.

Now that I have the rub rail off, it seems like the top and bottom pieces of the boat are one piece, I know they're not, but they may be glassed together, cuz IDK how to get the top off. Any suggestions?

Once you find a spot and get it started it will come apart completely. You have a private message.

Ok, thanks. Yeah, I'm gonna build my stands for her, I'm pulling her off the trailer so I can work on her and also update my trailer for a better setup. So hopefully that'll be done today and pull the cap off tomorrow. Jeez, I have no clue where I'm gonna put it though...I have no indoor space for the hull or the cap. Oh well, not too much I can do I guess, just makes it harder to work when it's this cold.
