i purchased a boat with a 140 merc outboard with the understanding that the lower unit would need to be rebuilt. new shift and throttle cables had been installed. i paid to have the lower unit rebuilt. when it was reinstalled and the moter was started it started in forward gear. when the control settings were moved to neutral the moter cut out. i plan to replace the controlls.since the moter is in gear does the lower unit need to be "in gear" when installed?

You need to put the shifter in foward and the lower unit in foward and then reinstall on the engine.

Trent, you are 100% correct. In 79 however, both need to be in reverse.

Craig ;)
