72 merc 800 crankshaft top seal?

Went to the lake today after my link n sync.

Ran like a bat outta hell in reverse. Fwd I got one decent run then it bogged down to about 1500 to 2000 rpm and would kick like it wanted to run faster.

Took the top cowl off and noticed oil that was slung from the flywheel.

Could my top seal be blown? I've seen the parts are only about 100 bucks to fix it.

Also it wouldn't idle at all without the warm up lever up past midway.

Could I need to adjust my throttle cable?

If the top seal is out that will effect the idle.

Idle as well as wot apparently. Nothing more than a huge air leak

Pull the flywheel, belt and stator, take the 4 bolts from the top main and in that casting there should be some small tapped holes, with a plate style puller and bolts in those holes the upper main housing will pull out, change the seal, check the bearing and reassm.

yeah looked at it. doesn't seem too terribly hard. Thanks for all your responses to my noob questions Laddie. Much appreciated.

The bearing doesn't feel rough (pulled all plugs and turned flywheel by hand.


Just looked and the parts aren't expensive at all.

will need a flywheel puller I assume.

Yes, the Mercury type pullers are available on ebay at a good price.

Will I have any issues goin fishin again today if I'm gentle with it till the parts get here. I have a rare day off.
