72 Merc 800 - removing actuating rod

Hello

In Preparation for installing power tilt on a 72 Merc 800, I need to remove the reverse lock assembly spring and actuating rod from the lower unit. According to the manual, I just raise the motor, invoke my tilt lock, and then just remove it. Can this be done without opening the lower unit? Is it supposed to lift out?? Any help appreciated...

There is a cotter key that goes thru the reverse lock dog and shaft remove the key and drive the shaft of the pull the lock assm. and actuating shaft out of the lower unit. Don,t just throw them away the lock assm new is about a $100
