72 merc motor stalling

Hello, my motor is a 1972 merc 50 hp and it often stalls at low speeds. I posted a question yesterday and the response was helpful, but after doing more research I have another question.

There are two levers at the console a warm up and a gear shift. I was wondering if when running at low speeds I could raise the warm up lever slightly to prevent the motor from dying. If I do not do this, I have to push the choke about every 5-10 seconds. Ideas?

Also- I am very new to operating a boat so any advice would be helpful.

Re: 72 merc motor stalling

If you are talking about the fast idle leaver, it cannot be raised while in gear (forward or reverse)

If the fast idle is raised the gear selector should not be able to be shifted from N. If you are currently in F or R, the fast idle leaver should be locked in its place.
