I got the wiring harness, timing belt & cranking link & sync done. The timing thing I was confused about but went with my gut. #1 piston TDC. & lined the rotor to #1 (late phasing of rotor button to dist cap post)

The cranking looked like around 9.5 deg by the lable at max advance but, the lable says #1 cyl max advance 10 deg also the is no gap between ign advance & first stage carb opening.

I need to get a book. My dad (who gave me the boat says he's got the book...... That dont do me any good right now though.

I was going to run it with the lower unit off for 30 secs or a min.\ to see how it sounded. However, I could not bring myself to put gas in it. My new fuel primer line & fuels lines, rebult carbs & fuel pumps. It's all virgin at the moment and just to sit for maby another week. I'll wait, I have faith it is right & will fire right up.

Need to finish the lower unit, It was full of good old gear oil no water evidence & full, so maybe it was just the engine oil/storage lube at the prop that I saw. I am sure that one trim cylinder is leaking stays wet after I clean it off, will have to do something with that sometime.

I am a dumb *****!!! Hold both the up trim & tilt butons at the same time to full tilt. I had bypassed the limit switch to get full tilt untill I looked at how the switch was wired. I rolled under the dash with my meter in hand ready to "go to town" on the problem. FUNNY!!!

Maby some pics later....Looking foward to getting it on the water.

You might tell us the HP of the motor you are working on. Most distributor Mercs of 1972 have idle timing set to 4-6*BTC and max timing at 21*BTDC. Did you retrofit the motor with an enrichener? Most Mercs of that vintage have choke shutters.

Also, distributor pullys usually have an arrow cast on them. This is set to point at the one or three dots on the timing decal, when the motor is set to TDC.
