changed pump because i was unsure of when the last time it was done and wasn't sure of operation. rebuilt as seloc book says, except i put the impeller in the housing first, then slid the whole assemble down the shaft...... now it overheats within 5min. never heard the alarm before. What else is there? what did i do wrong?

i put the key in. the only thing i did different then the book was i put the impeller in the housing, then slid it down the shaft. (didn't have book with me at time)the book says to put the impeller down the shaft, then the housing, while rotating the shaft. would that really make that much of a difference?

Austinm...you may have popped the key out during reassembly. On this particular assembly, putting the impeller down on the shaft is the way to go. There is no housing oring to pop out so sliding the housing down on the impeller and turning the drive shaft to get the housing down on the impeller is the way to go.

It's either the key or you've missed one of the water tubes during reassembly.

Re: 73 115 rude water pump

the key was def. in. i checked it when i tore it apart. there is an o-ring on the housing that i used coppercoat to make it stick so it didnt fall out. according to the book this is the improved water pump. one water tube is loose(fought it for an hour to try to get it to line up both times i tore it apart.) is there an easy way to get the tube to line up? also as i'm thinking about it, if the water pump has been upgraded from oem to the improved housing is the impeller the same? it looked the same. the book has pics of both original and new improved... i orded kit by model year.

OK...your certain the key is in and the tubes are in the housing.

One of two things come to mind. One..you may have pinched over one of the grommets in the housing when inserting the tube. Or two...the t-stat has stuck closed.

i thought the same thing, but it worked fine last week. like i said, the buzzer never went off before. still haven't had it in the water yet just a 35 gal. drum. would the t-stat stop working just like that? i just bought the boat and wanted to get everything worked out first. it ran last year and was prof. winterized. think its the t-stat?

Look up at those water tubes. There is a plastic sleeve on both of them that probably got shoved up the tubes somewhat. Pull them down and off of the tubes.

They are to be inserted in the water pump as a guide to help align those *&&%$#^& tubes with the pump.

That "O" Ring you mention. If that's the large "O" Ring that seals the housing to the plate, the impeller is no doubt hitting and displacing a portion of it which would cause the pump to drawl air.

Install the impeller and pump in this manner. Have the housing in your left hand with a slight bit of grease in the impeller cup area. Now, with your right hand, spin the impeller into that housing in a counter clockwise motion.

I always arrange the impeller so that the keyway is facing the starboard side of the lower unit when the housing is lowered into place. Apply a bead of Boat Armor Sealer 1000 (any auto parts store) to that "O" Ring.

Now, with the plate and key in place, simply slide the housing and impeller assembly down the driveshaft and into place. This assures you that the "O" Ring is where it belongs.

Let us know how you make out.... and if those guides are where I suspect they are.

Re: 73 115 rude water pump

thanks joe. there were no sleeves on the water pick up tubes when i reinstalled. i didnt see them. good news is i did everything else exactly as you described. (new to outboards) i'll check it out first thing. just incase the sleeves are not there or are destroyed how easy is it to get replacements?

They're still available and are part numbers 314765 and 314081. The last one (314081) being slightly shorter than the other so that one can lline up one tube, then the other. If you can't locate them, let me know.

Strange that they wern't there as they always viberate up those tubes. They aren't very much larger than the tubes and will blend in. One really has to look hard.

I do not know if they would flip into the correct direction but when i did my impeller I first put the blades rotating the wrong way and redid it before i ran the motor that could be your plroblem.

Re: 73 115 rude water pump

pulled it apart again today. checked for the plastic sleeves on the tubes.. they weren't there, and were not up inside. even got a mirror to look beyond the bend in the tubes. reinstalled the impeller exaclty as you describes (joe) and once the key was lined up, turned the shaft so to not pinch the impeller... it worked. ran with the muffs and in a bucket.... about 20 min and no buzzer. still hardly any water coming out the two holes at the top, but it is coming out of three small holes at the bottom. i was told this year motor was to old for tell tale is that true?
