Quick question for all you ignition gurus (sp).
It appears a new stator is in my future.Motor runs pretty good but the spark is fairly weak in my opinion. Did a quick once over and the leads from the charge coil appear to out of spec. Measured about 800 ohms . Removed the flywheel to take a look and both coils are oozing out their inners. As I understand from searching through numerous sources these should be between 550-700 ohms . The installed unit appears to be a 6 amp stator. Is it ok to just replace it with a 12 amp unit ? I figure more capacity has to be better. Looking at other ignition parts ie rectifier coils etc. the same part numbers are given for 6 or 12 amp. Is the flywheel different ?

Ok so not so quick but any input is appreciated.

Thanks , Mike

Re: 73 115 stator

Indy-
I'm no expert, but according to my 74 115 manual, charge coils should read 910 ohms + or - 75 ohms, so your readings aren't that far off. Did you check your ignition coils? A new coil should read about 1950-2000 ohms (no more than 3000 ohms) between the plug lead and the orange wire. I don't want to insult your intelligence, so forgive me if this sounds basic, but make sure you disconnect the terminals from the power pack when you make resistance readings. They should be isolated to get proper resistance readings! I don't know about the 12 amp upgrade. Sounds too easy. About $300 for a new stator, keep me posted, I wouldn't mind a 12 amp system myself!
