HEY Guys

I have a 73 1500 that I'm not totally sure I want to use yet and I've come across a couple of other motors that I'm looking at and could use some opinions.
I realize that the 140 is basically a 1500 but with no distributor.I know that the 140 is in good shape.
Also looking at an 82 150.Both have about the same equipment with them and are the same price.

1st question is...Is the 82 rated at the prop or the crank?I've done a lot of reading on here and there seems to be a few different opinions on what year it changed.

2nd question is...All things being equal condition wise does the I6 or the V6 150 have better power?By that I mean which one pulls better out of the hole.

I guess what I'm really asking is which one of the three would you want on your boat for all round performance other than the obvious buying the newest for better parts avail.

Thanks Chris

82 will be at crank. I believe it was around 89/90 that they went to prop ratings.

I have a 79 I6 140 and it seems a lot smoother than my 220 v6...

I would go on which ever as the least wear/corrosion on it. Check all the tilt/trim mounts play in bushes etc all that kind of thing, but I can say I got my V6 to replace the I6 and I cant yet bring myself to part with the I6 as its just such a damn lovely engine!

The V6 will run rings around an Inline. That being said, the Inlines do have their charm! Just depends on what you want and what experience you're after.

The 1400 I6 definitely has some improved features over the 150 I6, including stainless driveshaft, but it all boils down to condition. I'd take a super-clean 150 over a ratty newer 140. You can always upgrade to a newer lower unit (I put a '79 swept-back L/U on my old 1350 and it worked great).

IMHO, but if you're looking for hole shot go with the V6. As the old adage goes, there's "no substitute for cubic inches".

Cheers............ed

FYI, 1982 was the year Mercury changed from crank ta prop rating.

Ed is correct (about the drive shaft).

If yer in salt water that is a big deal, if fresh: not so big a deal. ;)

The v-6 had nearly 50% greater cubic inches, n' as Ed said: more snot outa the hole, butt: greater weight as well. (What ever floats that boat of yers).

The 1500 or the 140 would have lots of power fer the weight. Me thinks ya said ya already have a 1500, I sure like mine!!!! :D

BTW: some of the 140s had distributers as well. ;)

I actually prefer the battery driven CDI as it is simpler fer me single functional brain cell ta trouble shoot n' fix if necessary, (very rare I have ta fix the ingition on me purdy old Black Girls).

SOOOOOOO it comes down ta floatin' yer particular boat: does it not????

Me overpriced $.02. JR

Thanks for the input Guys!!
I am going to look at the V6 tonight.I do know that the 140 doesn't have the dist.(the guy says it is a 79) and I know the marine mech. that looked after it.It resides about 1 1/2 hours away from me right now,but spent it's whole life about 15 min from me.
As far as the 1500 goes I have he power head off and have pulled the covers to get a look at the pistons and cylinders. The plan was just to reseal the covers and replace crank seals, but now that I'm in there I'm thinking about re-ringing it.I'd still like to make it work good even if I end up using the V6.I only had it out a couple of times before I put it away.I did a lync and sync and adjusted the carbs but I still think I have fuel problems.Boat has an inboard tank and I couldn't get my hands on a portable tank to try at the time.It was just doggy as hell coming out of the hole.

Chris, how much were they asking for the 1400?

$1200 but open to offers. It comes with controls,T&T,fuel tank and steering I think. He also said he would throw in the stand that it was on.He doesn't have it advertised but did offer it up on another site.I think he is waiting for me as I told him that I would probably take it when I started getting around after my operation.I bought the 82 150 tonight so I'll have to let him know I won't be buying his.I'd like to have it as well but the wife is ready to kill me now.If you want I'll find out if it's alright for you to contact him.Let me know.
