Ive made a couple of posts on here about my fixing the head gasket to get this motor running.

Gasket finally came in. I installed it and put the motor back together.
I have yet to put the rope pull starter back on so I am using my cordless drill and a 3/4 bolt to turn the engine. I set the carb mix just as specified in the top secret file and in my manual.

It took several revolutions but finally kicked off. It ran like a screaming demon so much so that water was splashing everywhere.

I wasn't sure which knob to turn but I turned one and it slowed then died.

Then I could not get it to start So I opened the knob back up and cranked it several times and bang off like a demon again.

I got tired of messing with it and It appears that there may be fuel leaking from the carb.

I'm inclined to think that perhaps it is getting flooded and then I crank it a bunch and finally it fires off and then before I can adjust it it dies.

I think I need to go ahead and rebuild the carb properly as all I did was clean it.

Well it fires and that's a good thing. You should not run it faster than a fast idle in a barrel. Only high speed when your on the water. Your top needle is your slow speed and bottom is high speed. Set them as per your manual and it should fire from those setting and then you can fine tune them. A carb. kit would be a good investment for such an old motor however you need to do a linc and sync and needle adjustment after a carb. cleaning. Rick.
