I was having lots of problems with this motor. I rebuilt carbs, new power pack, 2 new coils, timer base, impeller/thermostat. I just couldn't get this thing to run good at WOT. I put a 15" pitch prop from a 19" prop. Anyway, I took it to the boat shop, evinrude specialists? and when I got it back it idled a little high but starts and runs good and smooth. Even revs up at WOT. Not sure if it was hitting 5500rpm but will check that.

The problem that I have, and maybe it isn't one is, the mark on the cam does not line up to the center of the roller like it says in the manual. The mark is low on the roller, almost to the very bottom. The idle screw is screwed in until it bottoms out (all the way adjusted in). Like I said, it seems to run fine like this but I think that something may be hurt running this motor so far out of spec. I tried to redo the lynk & Synk but it wouldn't run right when it was to spec, so I moved everything back out of wack and it was OK.

It has 130 PSI compression and 100PSI drop test was performed and the motor checks out great. It has 800 PSI on the dyno but they were not really sure what the exact spec on that year of motor should have been. There was no answer for the motor running out of adjustment. I think they gave up.
I can try another shop that is only around 75 miles away but I don't want to be without my boat for two weeks again and be told the same thing.

What does the motor se when the timing is off like this? Where would the problem lie with the cam not lining up? (and running correctly)

it's a 1973 i don't think they gave up they did what they had to.when things get this old set the book aside and tune it by ear.sounds like this guy did a bang up job salvaging what's left of this engine.

Thanks, I guess I really don't have much of a choice. I was curious if this setup would end up harming anything. If it will cause harm I will have it checked into further by an evinrude mech until I find one that can fix it. It looks like by your comments it is fine though. Thanks

Re: 73 50 HP Cam mark off

I have a 71 50hp and my idle adjust screw is turned almost all the way in. I read some where on another post that the carb butterfly shafts wear and allow too much air to be sucked into the carb. the test for this is to smear grease around the shaft ends and if the condition improves, then there you have it. I have yet to try this with mine because I got it to where I am mostly happy. If you try it report back and let us know. the only permanent cure I have heard of is new carb bodies. but I am still trying to dream up a way to machine them to install an o-ring or something.

Re: 73 50 HP Cam mark off

I have actually done that with a thick grease spray and no difference. I have even changed the pair of carbs from a boat that was running good. I didn't touch the adjustments on them and my motor ran very rich when I installed them.. On the boat that the carbs came from the screw was out 1.5 turns. My motor likes >5/8 for some reason. Seems to like to run real lean. I put my rebuilt carbs back on and decided to look elsewhere for the problems that I was having (mainly low rpm @ WOT.) Looks like I can live with this motor now, just didn't want to run it way out of wack and mess something up.
Thanks for your comments and help.
