I was having lots of problems with this motor. I rebuilt carbs, new power pack, 2 new coils, timer base, impeller/thermostat. I just couldn't get this thing to run good at WOT. I put a 15" pitch prop from a 19" prop. Anyway, I took it to the boat shop, evinrude specialists? and when I got it back it idled a little high but starts and runs good and smooth. Even revs up at WOT. Not sure if it was hitting 5500rpm but will check that.
The problem that I have, and maybe it isn't one is, the mark on the cam does not line up to the center of the roller like it says in the manual. The mark is low on the roller, almost to the very bottom. The idle screw is screwed in until it bottoms out (all the way adjusted in). Like I said, it seems to run fine like this but I think that something may be hurt running this motor so far out of spec. I tried to redo the lynk & Synk but it wouldn't run right when it was to spec, so I moved everything back out of wack and it was OK.
It has 130 PSI compression and 100PSI drop test was performed and the motor checks out great. It has 800 PSI on the dyno but they were not really sure what the exact spec on that year of motor should have been. There was no answer for the motor running out of adjustment. I think they gave up.
I can try another shop that is only around 75 miles away but I don't want to be without my boat for two weeks again and be told the same thing.
What does the motor se when the timing is off like this? Where would the problem lie with the cam not lining up? (and running correctly)
