"73" 50hp johnson shifting problem?

motor shifts fine manually at motor, control box somtimes will not throw it in fwd. shift it in manually at motor it will open up and run at top end. When the control box works and throws it in fwd the motor will not open up. While shifting the control box you can see it always will shift into reverse & nuetral but somtimes will not pull into fwd. Would this problem be the cables or control box? This boat has been inactive for 3 or 4 years, could it be greased? Any comments would be greatly appreciated.

is this a manual or eletric shift . manual has 2 cables eletric has 1 cable .check back at lunch and look at the manual.

It is a manual, 2 cable ,gear and throttle cables with push key choke and fast Idle lever.

it sound like your shift box needs cleaning and regreasing . taken the 3 screws out that holdes it together . it should seperate you will be able to see where it needs the grease . check bothcables see if they are mooving as far as they should go .if it was working when it was put up the box just needs cleaning and new grease
