Hi, I own a '73 65 hp evinrude that has been a really good motor. I just have a few questions about it.

#1. When I take it out on the lake I always do a few laps around the lake to warm it up good. I shut it off to fish and after 30 minutes to 2 hours of fishing I go to fire it back up and I always have to choke it. When I do choke it, it fires up and runs fine. I didn't think that this was normal but is it? Are these motors known to be cold-natured or should I just let it warm up for longer? Any comments or personal experiences would be great.

#2. A while back I decided to add in an extra piece of fuel line (about 6') in addition to the standard piece with the primer bulb that you can buy at any walmart. This was done so I could move the tank closer to the front of the boat, under the center console (for weight distribution). When I did splice in the new piece the boat would run fine for a few seconds after I primed the bulb, and would get up to full throttle, but then the motor would start revving up and down, causing the boat to lurch, eventually it went back down to idle speed and would hardly rev at all. I took it home and took a look at the carbs which needed cleaning, so I cleaned them and put the fuel line back the way it was before (without the extra piece) and now it works fine. Do you guys think that I could add the extra piece back in now that the carbs are cleaned or does it sound more like a fuel pump problem? Really need some help on this one, Thanks.

Re: '73 65 hp questions

sounds like having to choke it on restart is normal. If you had to do it after just shutting off no, but after it sits awhile yes. If you spliced in a line you probably had an air leak. Those motors hate air leaks. you can run a longer line as long as you don't have an air leak.

I figured that about the choke. I'll probably put the extra fuel line back in and see if I can find any leaks. Thanks for your help.

I have a 1972 65hp Johnson - its pretty much the same motor as yours. I usually have to choke it on first start-up of the day, but not on subsequent start-ups. That said, I usually don't sit anywhere for 2 hours at a time, so your need to choke again doesn't surprise me. As long as the motor runs well in all other aspects, i wouldn't worry about this too much.

I have an aux tank that sits on the foredeck of my boat, when I put it in the boat. The fuel line runs to a four way valve (left, right, aux, feed) that is located right next to the steering console. From there the fuel lines runs to a water separator, and from there to the motor. My boat is 17.5 feet overall and I have no problems with the long fuel line run.

Yeah I'm beginning to think that it will be alright. Hopefully I can get out on the lake this weekend to test it out. Thanks for your help.
