65ESL73R - When I rebuilt the 3 carbs, the top carb needle valve had a small metal clip which hooked to the float. The other two carbs did not and the needle valvle had no barb for a clip, it was just flat. The carb kit had new needle and seats with clips for all 3. I installed them on all 3 since that seemed like the correct thing to do.
1: Did I do the right thing by installing the clips on all 3 and not jsut the top carb?
2: If so, why would there not have been clips on all 3 in the first place?
It seems to run much better now although I have not yet tank or lake tested. It just sounds much different.
3: I am sure that is mostly the carb rebuild, but could have the needle and seat not having clips caused some of the issues I was seeing with low speed stalling and rough starts? Has anyone else ever seen this?

Thanks in advance, any direction is much appreciated.

1. you betcha!
2. the last guy only rebuilt the top carb or at least, only replaced that float valve. Kind of a waste of time to only do one, in my opinion. The old style didn't have the clips, so were more likely to stick shut.
3. sure, it could have contributed...but in my experience she always just seems happier with fresh carbs.

now, go fishing!

Hey JTEXAS..... You are the man. Thank very much for all your help with my carb issues on this post and the other one you replied to as well. Boy for these motors someone would have to be pretty dumb not to just rebuild the carbs if they have been setting at all. This was way too easy. The engine I got had set for 10 years but had only ever had about 100 hours on it. It's pracatically brand new. I bought it from someone I know very well and they just never really used it since it was new, one owner. Anyway it ran ok, but never ran real well. I am so glad I overcame my apprehension and just did it. I am a jet and helicopter mechanic by training and they dont have carbs. lol

I am outie, goin to the lake. I got fishin to do.

Thanks again!

Re: 73 65hp needle and seat clip question

Here is a little note for anyone rebuilding carbs on this motor. Make sure when you replace the air box that you do not pinch or kink the fuel line. It's kind of a tight fit and it is real easy to get them kinked behind the box. I guess this is part of my learning process. I got on the lake and no fuel to the carbs. I should have tried to start it before I left for the lake. I had only run the motor without the airbox installed. I just thought, oh, its just the air box, no biggie and I am in a hurry. Anyway, not sure if anyone has ever done this before, but I did so maybe this will save someone else from the same mistake.
