I can bridge the solenoid and the starter engages. The electric choke engages when I turn the starter switch (key) just no power past solenoid.

How do I probe the nuetral and safety switchs? meaning what wires and what do I have to do such as engage key? Can I assume starter switch is good given above?

Re: 73 65hp no power to starter

you haven't really ruled out the starter switch -- if it tests positive for continuity between terminals "B" and "S" when the key is turned to start, then it's good.

Measure the voltage at the small solenoid input terminal (yellow/red wire) with the key turned to "start". If you have 12V there, check for continuity between the solenoid ground terminal and the engine block. If the ground is good and 12V is good, then you know the solenoid is bad.

No voltage at the solenoid, troubleshoot the wiring harness and neutral safety switch.

The neutral safety switch is in the control box in series with keyswitch terminal "S" -- it should test positive for continuity with the shifter in neutral, open circuit otherwise.

Thanks, I will check the Nuetral switch an confirm the key switch is good. FYI: I already replaced the solenoid thinking that ws the problem but no such luck. I am thinking either the nuetral or starter switch is bad. I will let you know what I find out tomorrow.

jiggle your control handle, sometimes the switch gets stuck.

Thanks for the pointers. The problem is fixed! Thre ws a loose screw on the nuetral position switch which allowed the plunger to slip past the gear/throttle lever. It thought it was in gear. Pretty simple, and thanks for heading me down that path. The remote control was very easy to take apart and re-assemble. I was dreading it but it was really a piece of cake. Woohoo, I am going fishin!
