Not a lot of info provided to think on, but I have had a woodruff key in the flywheel-crankshaft interface shear on such a thing as a backfire and die, or hitting a submerged obstacle. That will affect your timing and definitely affect your ability to start the engine. BTDT
Now if you are misfiring and not backfiring, that is usually ignition induced; i.e. the fuel is not exploding in the cylinders which could be caused by numerous things.
