73 850 Won't go into reverse

Engine shifts fine into forward and neutral. When out of the water running on the muffs it goes into reverse and prop spins as it should. When in the water and you shift to reverse gears grind and won't go into reverse. It's seems that when the prop is under load in the water it won't go Ito gear. Cables and slide that rotates shift shaft are adjusted to maximum travel. Any thoughts on what's causing this and how to fix will be greatly appreciated. Tired of having to manually turn the boat around to get away from the ramp LOL.

Sounds like the shift shaft is off a tooth. Probably happened at the last impeller change. Drop the lower and rotate the shaft 1 spline.
