73 850 Wont Start

I have a 850 that I cannot start unless I use ether on it. After I got back from the lake and found out not to use ether I can't get the thing to start any other way. I'm having a lot of troubles navigating the search forum. I have a camping trip coming up in a couple of weeks and really want to get this thing going good. Any help? I'm going to change out the water impellar and gear fluid this weekend and want to figure out the no start thing too. Thank y'all much

Clean out your carbs. Particularly the idle circuit.

David, Check the compression on that motor. If it is low, the motor may not start, it will need attention. if the compression is good (100+PSI and even on all 4 cylinders), put the plugs in the plug wires and touch the bases to the block and see a nice fat blue spark. if that is good, the carbs are next.
