Hey guys, last time I had the boat out (last year) I ran into some weird operations... the motor kind of surged (motor revved way up) and kind of "jumped" up.... i'm thinking the gear slipped from forward to neutral, then hit reverse to make the lower unit jump. I winterized it, and haven't looked at it since. I changed the lower unit oil twice last year as it was a new motor to me, and both times the oil came out clean, with no traces of metal shavings, or water leakage. Just wondering if someone can give me a heads up as to what I should expect to find when I drain the lower unit oil this time. I held off on draining/changing the oil before storing it over the winter as I'd rather have new oil fresh for the spring. Since then, I've bought a new boat with a newer motor, and may end up selling the Merc if the new motor is clean running. (new motor is a 1978 johnson 70hp) only reason for selling the merc would be due to the fact the johnny is a newer motor. If I keep it, I'd like to know it's in good running order. If I sell it, I'd like to sell the motor in good working order, as i've seen alot of people buy motors that were "good motors" and ran into all kinds of issues down the road. I'm an honest guy, and wouldn't want to rip off a buyer under false pretenses. Am I right assuming it slipped gears? If the answer is yes, I'll have to invest in a gearset no-doubt. Just want some feedback before I dish out the dough. Thanks in advance.
