I'm only getting a slow drip from the "tell tale" when the motor is running. I noticed the exhaust leg filling up with water. I removed the lower unit and attached a garden hose to the water tube. Still nothing from the "tell tale", but I noticed water running out from around the exhaust extension inside of the leg. IS THIS NORMAL?? Water does flow thru the block when forced back thru the tell tale.

You may already have done this, but run something through the telltale hose. It's not uncommon for spiders to build nests inside them and that will lead to your symptom.

Sounds like you've had the lower unit off that motor. Did you check the impeller? It might be time for a new one.

I have the 1974 model of the same engine.

Another note: the water normally goes out with the exhaust, so it's normal for it to come out of the exhaust extension when the lower unit is off. I'll still bet you have something clogging the telltale tube.

Re: '73 Eska/Ted Williams 9.9hp water flow

Thank you for the info. I did blow compressed air thru the telltale and the water inlet tube. When I run the garden hose on it, I do get a stream thru the telltale. I think the impeller is good. There is alot of water coming from the exhaust leg when it runs, it just doesn't seem to make it to the telltale. Maybe the impeller is just weak?? Shouldn't there be a stream when the motor is running??, or is that only at full throttle?

Thanks again,
Jon

Yes, there should be a steady stream out of the telltale when the engine's running. Mine emits a stream from idle to full throttle. Just a steady stream.
