'73 Evinrude 115 - Lower unit removed in neutral

After all of my planning, I still ended up removing the lower unit with it in neutral. How that happened, I'm not sure but the fact is that it is in neutral. The question is, should I try to put it back in leaving it in neutral? Will I be able to do that? Or should I do something else before I try to put it back in.

It really doesn't matter what gear it is in, as long as you can get the lever connected at the top end
