73 evinrude 115 run position?

need a little help. just bought the boat and took it to the lake yesterday. motor runs fine but we couldn't get it to lock down......appears the latch doesn't engage the bar. this year doesn't have power trim/tilt so it is manual and has the run/tilt lever to manually lock motor up or down.
are we doing something wrong?
also, in the first picture, you can see the black tilt/run lever as well as a spring loaded screw.....anybody know what this screw is for?
thanks for any help.....don't want to wait until the manual gets here.

i have a 74' 85 HP Johnson. it looks to me like everything in the pics is in the proper places. i would move the tilt lock lever up and down while your have the motor supported on something to hold it up safely. and make sure that the lock is moving fully and there are no bent rods controling it.

As for the screw with the spring on it, I just have an empty hole there that never had anything in it.

thanks for the reply. i have moved the lever with the motor fully up and the latch probably moves less than 1 inch....seems to be binding on something......but i'm not sure how much it should move.
i'm gonna lube it up good and see what that does for it.

The spring loaded screw is the trailering lock knob. The little label pointing to it used to say " Trailer Lock Push and Turn".

To secure the motor in tilt position for trailering, push in the trailering lock knob and turn it 90 degrees clockwise.

To release the trailering lock, turn the tilt lever down to the run position and raise the motor slightly to release the trailering lock knob.

The trailering part of this nomenclature is really misleading, because if you use the tilt alone while trailering it will often break it. The solution to this problem was covered in OMC Service Bulletin #1325. Click the thumbnail, please.

thanks! appears that mine has already been updated so the spring screw is not needed.
anybody know how much movement the latch should have between the tilt and run position?

It has a locking points that is about 3/4 inch and they sometimes stick so that you have to pull it aft. See the thumbnail.

that appears to be the mechanicals to lock it in the tilt position. i can move the motor up and down with no trouble........i just can't get latch to engage the bar once the motor is down.

ok.....update.
found the problem. on my motor, with regard to the latching system, i have a spring, a rod and then another shorter rod (5-6") that attaches next to the spring and the other end rests over a screw that looks to have a star-typed washer. everytime the run/tilt lever was moved it would release tension on this rod and it would fall off from the screw end and hang in the way of the latch.
i bent the hell out of it dropping the motor and not realizing that it fell but when i took it off the motor latched in fine. i can't see that it did anything-unless it is some sort of safety for the spring.....but i don't know.
anybody know what this extra rod is for? i don't think i see it on the diagram that was posted by ezeke.

Not sure that I understand what you are doing, but the Locking Lever should snap over the Thrust Rod when you lower the motor with the black handle flipped down.

Swinging the black Handle up so that the tension on the locking lever is released should free the motor to be raised. The outer arc of the black handle is around 3" when moved.

the latch engages fine now.......with the extra rod off. when moving the lever the latch would release tension on the spring and extra rod and the extra rod would fall off the screw and hang in the way of the thrust rod...not allowing it to engage.
i'm not home or i would take a better picture, but i did bring the extra rod to straighten it back out....here's a picture of it. this is NOT the rod between the lever and the latch. i'm not sure what this one actually did.

I inherited a 73 Larson Shark with a 73, 115 hp Evinrude- No manual included. I have been trying to figure out what all of this was used for for days, now I know I am missing parts. Where do I find the diagrams for this or manual to get the right parts for this. I have had to have someone lift the motor to pull out the thrust bar for trailering. All that is on the motor is the latch, spring and thrust bar. Someday I will have all the bugs worked out. I do appreciate the information I have gleaned so far from this post and the answers.
