I've discussed this topic a couple of weeks ago. I am working on a friends lower unit, model number 50372R. I have got to the point where I need to remove the driveshaft pinion gear nut. The shaft will move up and down, but will not turn. I have come to the conclusion with the help of others on this board that the forward and pinion gears are engaged. I have the shift rod assembly out down to the lower unit case. It will not move up or down. Therefore will not shift.

The information shows a pin in the next two parts of the shift mechanism that can only be removed one the shift cylcer is removed. It will not come out easily.
How can I get it completely out of gear so the drive shaft will turn?
The prop shaft is free to turn and I have removed everything to the pinion gear. The gears are all crisp and show little wear. The bearings and seals are shot, but the major components look good. The case cracked due to freezing.
Thanks, this group has a tremendous amount of knowledge that I'm glad they're willing to share.
Steve

If the case is cracked..why not finish the job and cut the rest of it up so you can remove the gears?

Or do you wish to save the case?

TMD

Re: 73 Evinrude 50hp lower unit repair

Doc,
The case is only cracked enough to let the lube out, about 2 inches horizontally near the skeg. There are no seals that ride in the area and I have a good TIG welder buddy (builds aluminum boats). I hoped to save it. The folks I've talked to about repairs, such as used lower unit, or parts don't have much to say. The only hope I had was to get a refurbished unit in Minneapolis. That was for about $500 which was reasonable, but above what my friend can spend. He's retired.
Thanks for the help.

papasage
Thanks for the offer, but I'm afraid this is a low buck operation. Your price is very reasonable. He bought this boat and motor with the information that it was in good shape.
I hope to get the repairs done with new bearings and seals as well as welding for under $250.
I would like to find a used unit or a case.
Thanks again.

papasage10,
Thanks, I have sent the email. Any other suggestions for removing the driveshaft or removing the shift mechanism would be helpful, until I work out an alternative plan.
Thanks
sray

Re: 73 Evinrude 50hp lower unit repair

Im posting again in hope of finding some fresh information. I need to get the forward gear and pinion gear apart so as to turn the driveshaft to remove the nut. The Shift mechanism is stuck it won't move up or down so it won't seperate the gears entirely. I'm down to the case and the tube covering the part that move won't come off either.

i've had alot of good help on this board, I hate to ask for more but I could sure use it.
