I just rebuild a 73 evinrude that had not ran in 10 years, new carb kits and water pump was about all it took. I've had it on the lake once, and it ran like a top. Brought it back home, lenghthened the battery cables about 4 feet and added a longer feul line (was running wires in the 16 foot flatbottom I'm building) and now the moter will not start. I've tried shortening the battery cables, but it doesn't seem to be the problem. When grounding the plugs against the engine block you can count three sparks, growing weaker each time, then they dissapear completely. I've read alot of posts about the power pack, Is this the problem or is it something else? Thanks alot
Corey

Just to clarify, the problem is spark, cylinders are getting fuel and the motor will turn over once when you try to crank. Thanks

Bass runner,
I'm relatively an amateur at boat motors, I'm 17 but have a lot of tinkering experience on lawn mowers and cars.... hehehe daddy raised me right. I know that the coils are good, what else should I look for before I narrow down to just the power pack?

Heat the powerpack with a hair dryer before you perform the spark test and see if you get any spark at all. If not, I would consider it the powerpack is defctive. What bothers me is that it ran well before you rewired it. Make real sure the cables are clean and tight and try it again. If the motor will only turn over once, I would suspect the battery is bad under a load starting ot the wiring is bad... TAke the battery to an auto parts store and have them load test it to rule that out and go from there. Do this even if it's new. They have been known to come from the factory bad..

I'm curious about heating the powerpack? What would that do to the spark test? Just curious... Thanks

Corey

I had a problem like that with a 60hp. it used one coil for three cylinders. The spark was there but it was small and variable. trned out to be the coil.
