'73 Evinrude 65HP Triumph trouble RE-starting - stator issue?

I posted a while back (couldn't find original thread) about a strange issue I am having with my '73 Evinrude Triumph (65373R). The boat starts and runs perfectly. However, after idling for a long time or after letting it sit after running hard, it will sometimes cut out and then have trouble restarting. I have to turn it over and over (with idle lever up) for it to finally catch. Sometimes it takes a couple of minutes. When I originally posted someone stated that it sounded like the stator or power pack.

I replaced the stator and power pack last fall with a BRP replacement parts and when I put it in the water, it would barely run - felt like it was running on 1/3 power, cutting in and out. So we put the OLD stator back on and it ran fine again. Also, the old stator was testing at about 300+ volts (says the mechanic) and the new one was about half that. So, I thought the new stator I purchased was defective, returned it and got a new one (which is sitting in my garage) but have been using the old stator since. The boat has not had it's "issue" again until today... idled for a while waiting to trailer boat and then it cut out/didn't want to restart.

I took a pic of the powerhead below the stator (see below) and there is some of that "sticky" stuff coming down - is this from the stator? Does this problem sound like a stator issue or something else? And finally, is it possible that the first stator I tried to put on was defective or are new stators not as powerful for some reason?

Thanks in advance for any help...

Anyone? Could this be the timer base or more likely stator issue?

If it is the present stator doing the drooling, it is bad and needs to be replaced. However, the drool could be from an old stator that is no longer in there. Inspect the actual stator's coils for leakage.

Thanks... I think it is the original stator as the evinrude replacement looks a bit different. I'll swap that (again) and see if I can get appropriate voltage.

Resolved! Posting again in case anyone has similar issues as this took me forever to figure out. The stator was the culprit of my problems (engine started/ran fine but acted up when warmed up). To further complicate things, the brand new OEM replacement stator I bought was defective in that it only produced about 1/2 the voltage of the old one! Another new stator did the trick.
