Running through the electrical troubleshooting and found that when I disconnect the kill wire the motor would start. Took it down to the lake to try it out and it all of a sudden would no longer run or start. Seems like no spark again! I checked the two brown wires for the output from the stator and it's reading in beteen 115v and 117v. Instructions say 150v min? Anyone have any ideas...

Is there any kind of substance dripping out of that stator?

When all is as it should be, the engine must turn over at least 300 rpms in order for the stator to energize the powerpack. A slow cranking engine will produce no ignition/spark.

A fast cranking engine with a failing stator..... same results.

Removed old stator it was pretty rough looking cracks in wires and stuff. Put practically brand new stator in from my blown 73 evinrude 135 hp. End result is still no spark and only 110v max at brown wires on power pack. I have a funny feeling the motor isn't turning over fast enough but I'm not 100% positive as I don't have a way to check the rpm. With the battery attached and booster cables to the battery seems to turn over fairly slowly and produces only about 90v at brown wires. Jump straight to the starter and I get a faster crank but only 110v. Is there something else that could be reducing the voltage at the power pack or am I simply not getting enough rpm's on the crank.

Why You Are Not Getting Spark. Looking At Your Motor From The Back Of Your Boat Look At All The Wires On Your Power Pack. Look For The #2 And #4 Those Give Spark To The Left Side Of Your Motor. Then Look For The #9 And #12 And Those Give Spark To The Right Side Of Your Motor. The Fastes Way To Find What Side You Are Not Getting Spark Go To Harbor Freight Or Any Auto Parts Store And Get Yourself A Spark Testor I Got One For $5.00. Then Put Testor On Each Spark Plug One At A Time Crank Motor And See What Cylinder Is Not Getting Spark. First Remove Fuel Line So Motor Wont Start. When You Find What Side Is Has No Spark Trase The Wires From Power Pack To The Triger And Find What Sensor Is Bad. I Found One On Ebay For Good Price Because Boat Shop Said They Could Not Get It Anymore. When I Replased My Bad Sensor On Triger I Got Spark On All Cylinders And Now Motor Is Running Great. You Will Find Triger Under The Stator. Under Flywheel Hope This Will Help You With Your Motor Good Luck.

Re: 73 Evinrude 85hp Stator dva output

forgive me if im doing this wrong im new to the forum. anyway i have a 1978 85 hp evinrude that has no spark on all 4 cylinders. ive replaced stator with new one, and still have no spark. the old one was definitly bad could only ohm at 238. its not likely that the 2 powerpacks or the 4 coils would go bad at the same time can somebody help me.

iwannago, try testing for spark with the spark plugs removed. It will crank faster that way. If you get spark with plugs removed, but not with them installed, cranking speed has something to do with it.

BTW, while on the subject, believe it or not you can generate enough RPM by starting it with a rope. This last weekend, I shut my motor off about 5 miles up river. As luck would have it, the starter chose that moment to die. I used a piece of rope that I had in the boat, and it started right up with less than one turn of the flywheel. That felt good.
