73 Inline 6 150hp cuts out?

I just started the motor on the muffs,and it would run ok for a couple on minutes then it cut out as if Iwas turning the motor off .it starts up again no worrys. Any ideas?

Does the fuel primer bulb collapse? If not, it may indicate eletrical issue. You must have +12VDC to the red and white wires at the switchbox, in order to have spark. Distributor trigger could be failing, and there is no good way to detect. However, if that is the case, it will fail permanently pretty soon. Check all connection on switchbox

Ok will check the connections. I had a episode the other day it would fire on the starter motor cranking but, once I stopped it would stall. So I kept the start motor turning and the motor ldled. I know its bad for starter. It went ok after that till now..

Running when the starter is active, is a classic example of a failing trigger.

Thanks Chris, sounds electrical the way it cuts out. This isn't going to be a cheap fix..

Sounds like that coil worked for you. Or did you get another ?

I have been flatout doing uni work. I thought I would do a good thing and start the motor up and, now a new problem has emerged.
So I still have the old Coil..

The CDI Troubleshooting Guide details testing your ignition to determine what is at fault.

CDI Electronics Practical Outboard Ignition Troubleshooting

Just remember do NOT attempt to remove the dist rotor, it is part of the shaft and not just NLA< they are starting to get harder to find.

If it is the NLA trigger, CDI has a source, and there are a LOT of great old motors still alive with CDI parts.
