Hi,

I was looking at the wires under the cowl the other day, and the ones that run to the kill switch are fairly bad with copper exposed. The kill switch itself is missing the button, so I have never used it. I am afraid that with the frayed wires that I may get an unintentional short. Is this possible? Can I just disconnect these wires completely?

Thanks!

Re: 73 Johnson 25HP kill switch question

short answer is yes...if you still have the knife connections where the kill switch wires connect to the 2 wires that go under the armature plate, I'd suggest that as a good place to disconnect them, Simply remove the sleeve that goes over that connection and unhook the wires from the kill switch. You can then tape the wire connection ends <separately, don't tape them together> that go under the armature plate, and you can also remove the kill switch and the wires that lead from it. Someone down the line might want to reinstall a kill switch and they'll have the 2 knife connections to hook to. Well, should have looked at schematic first. You've got a different setup on that 25hp., but the theory is the same.Remove the shorting switch and tape up any remaining connection points. You don't want them shorting to ground or each other as you've correctly stated, this will kill the ignition.
