Ok I just bought a 73 Johnson 50hp. I have been told there is no **** hole it droplets out the exhaust relief. Well I hooked it up to the muffs and I wasn't getting anything out the relief. So I got a new impeller installed that and still nothing. I downloaded a copy of the book for it and it says very very little water may come out while hooked to the muffs but when in a tank or in the lake you will see a **** stream. Is this true cuz it seems kind of odd that it would do that.

So all in all would I have other problems causing it not to ****? Or will I have to get it in the lake to find out for sure?

All your help will be great as this is driving me nuts. I have not had a motor w/o a **** stream before.

Thanks

Enlarged prostate? ;) sorry, couldn't resist.......Only problem keeping it from pissing is the design. Make sure your overtemp horn works.

The exhaust relief holes are where exhaust can blow out if the water pressure under water is too great. you might never see more than a mist.

I have a 1975 50hp Evinrude that is the same way. It never pees with the muffs, but at WOT or after cruising for a while, you can see water "girgling" out. It's not really a jet of water. More like a waterfall :)

Isn't a enlarged prostate when you have to go all the time? Ya know those gotta go gotta go commercials? LOL

So how will I know if my over temp horn works? When it idles it gets really hot to the touch but give it a little gas and she cools down. No wonder why they switched to the **** hole design.

Also what is a WOT I'm new to marine motors so don't know alot of the terms.

Thanks for the help.

WOT is wide open throttle. When you turn the your key to the "on" position does it give you a little chirp? If so, that is your horn being tested to let you know that it is working.

there's a tan wire connected to a temp switch near the top of the cylinder head. peel back the rubber sleeve and touch the bare wire to the head (key "on"), should sound a steady tone.

WOT = With Out Thinking.

When I flip the key on I have NO chirp. So I'll try what jtexas said and go from there. I dont want to rely on a buzzer. Anyone know how to hook up a temp gauge. I thinks its ez but never done it before. And what is the normal operating temp for this type of motor?

Thanks

Ok 1 more question since it has a hot buzzer that means it already has a temp sender right? So hooking up a temp gauge would be easy. Just hook it up to the tan wire coming off the sender?

The "sender" is just a switch - normally off, switches on when the temp hits (I forget exactly, but it's over 163? F).

Self-test on start-up wasn't invented until much later.

But there's probably a spot for one there on the head....
