Ok I am ready to about give up. I have a 73 johnson 65hp that refuses to go over 3500 rpm. I have rebuilt the carbs, synched the carbs, changed a coil that wasn't firing properly, changed the stator since it had a couple cracks in the coils, new head gasket, new plugs, new thermostat, water pump(was due) and I have even kicked it for good measures. I have another power pack that I will probably throw on today. not sure if it is good or not though. My local boat shop is worthless and if you ask them a question they want you to bring the boat in so they can look at it for 85 bucks an hour. I am starting to miss having points! It runs great up to 4k then it drops down to 3500 and the power just isn't there. The carbs are good. Have been through them twice. When I do a spark test on the cylinders I get fire on all three. Nice bright blue spark. I am doubting that it is a coil failing since I have replaced the coils with known good ones and it still does it. compression is 125 to 130 all cylinders. I have a used trigger from a motor that lost a cylinder and a few extra coils. Does anyone have any ideas other than it is the carbs or i have a coil failing when it gets hot?
