I recently rebuilt my carbs because my motor had set for 10 years. Prior to the rebuild it would not run at slow speed for any period of time. It ran ok on muffs and at full speed on the lake. I could not pull into the dock or go from forward to reverse or it would die. Once it died, sometimes it took me forever to start it back up once it did die. I had to play with it to get it to go. get it started and throw it into gear. If I pulled up the warm lever it seemed to exacerbate the difficulty for the motor to resart after it died, if that makes since.

Now this baby runs and sounds awesome on muffs. so I took her to the lake and ran my battery dead cranking it after it died a couple times. It runs great for a while (maybe 5 minutes or so) at slow speed and then it dies and is almost impossible to start again. When it dies it is as if it is either flooding itself or not getting gas, I can't tell. It looked like I may have had some gas running out of one of the carbss after it died but couldnt really tell by the time I got the lid off and peeked in the hole. I have not had it up to any high speed yet since I was on a wakeless lake, but whenever I gun it it seems to want to take off just fine. I am pretty sure it will again run full speed no issue. I am a little concerned I have a different issue since although it now sounds much better and runs much longer at low speed, it is still behaving sorta like it did before. I believe it is doing the same thing where it is harder to start if i use the warm up lever but I have not been able to play with it enough to be sure.

Thanks for any advice! I am hoping the back ground info helps ID the issue.

Re: 73 Johnson 65hp run issues

i believe you have a very simple issue. you set the idle speed on muffs, where there is not any back pressure on the exhaust. when you put it in the water, the motor cannot push the exhaust out of the leg, so the motor stalls. set your idle speed higher on the muffs, then you have to fine tune the idle speed with the boat in the water and in gear, at idle. also if you have not check the timing and link n sinc, you need to.

Hey tashasdaddy, these are the carbs with no adjustable needle. They are both fixed.
