My Johnson 85 is fairly easy to start when cold. It starts immediately when warm. The problem is when it's been sitting for about an hour or so. Then is it very difficult to start. It will usually fire once, just enough to disengage the starter but not start. I end up having to try up to 10-15 times while trying various combinations of choke/warm up lever to get it to start and stay running. 3 years ago we "awoke" this outboard and had all 4 coils and powerpack replaced as well as rebuilding the carbs. Now I know you guys will probably ask how far the carbs were torn down and the answer is I don't know. Our mechanic seems to do good work though and I would expect him to do something half-assed. Any ideas what my problem is?

Look on top of the engine and see if you have two wires leading away from the lifting eye. If you do, you may still have a temperature senser connected to your choke that was usually removed from the system by service departments in the 1970's Removal is a little complicated, but if you still have it, send me a PM and I will email the pdf of the Service Bulletin and wiring map.
