I HAVE 1 CYLINDER THAT HAS A BROKEN RING, WOULD IT BE WORTH REBUILDING? WONDER WHAT THE COST WOULD BE? SHOULD I JUST BUY ANOTHER USED OUTBOARD? I DON'T WANT TO SPEND MORE THAN $1500.00
YOUR OPINION WOULD BE HELPFUL.
THANKS

The cost is related to you doing the work or not? If you can do the labor your cost will be much lower

Re: 73' JOHNSON 85HP REBUILD

Normally, you could rebuild the engine for $1500. Yours is getting to the point where you may want to consider another engine. Your block is somewhat unusual, in that it is the smaller 92 cubic inch version, not the more standard 99 cubic inch. As such, the standard and oversize factory pistons are NLA. If the rings let go, you may even need another head, which has long since been discontinued. Without power trim and the hydraulic/mechanical gearcase, it is missing many desireable features. You should be able to find another good used engine, years newer for your projected overhaul price.
