73 Merc 85hp - won't go into gear

I'm getting ready for Salmon season, while doing a power up in the driveway I found that the lower unit will not go into gear. Shut it down put into neutral and got out to take a look. I found that the prop does not free spoil (spin) easily. Very sluggish lots of drag.
I am a little worried the salt from last may have done some damage.
Looking for suggestions...
Thanks Don

First check the shift cable for proper operation and replace the gear oil. Did you change it last year? If that doesn't help, you may need to drop the LU for inspection..

The boat was not used last year. The shift linkange is (or was) properly adjusted. The prop does not rotate freely, very gummy, I am thinking I need to drop the lower unit.
Looks like I have a few bolts to remove and it comes off.
Any tips on dropping it?
Thanks, Don

Drain the LU oil see what it looks like and if there are any shavings before you drop LU.

Don, TO drop the LU, put the motor in neutral. Remove three nuts above the antiventilation plate, and two below A-V plate. Now remove the zinc anode using a thin wall 3/8" socket + extension and a 7/16 or 1/2 socket(I forget which it is). There is a bolt under the zinc anode.
