I am been looking through a few messages and there seem to be some very knowledgable people on her so I have a question I hope someone can help me with,

I have a 1973 Merc inline six model 1150 ser# 3651012 and I am in need of a lowerend. The guy I bought it from said the lower end had been rebuilt but it was missing shims and a lock ring to keep the spanner nut from loosening and the reverse gear is toast and the forward gear is not much better shape.. ANYWAYS, They say they dont make this lower end anymore. But I think I recall someone else on here had a prob ginding a lower end with a motor like mine and they said any case from 70-80 something would work. But I have also been told that the bolt patterns on the mounting bolts are differnt... So I dont know. I havnt got the $1200 to buy the new gears. Maybe someone knows some good salvage places I might find a used lower end or gears? I live in Idaho so anything in the Pacific northwest would be great but I will take anything.

Thanks in Advance!!!!

You can pretty much buy complete lowers all day long for those things for $100-$200 bucks. Check ebay and craigslist. Last one I sold a few weeks ago went for $100 to a forum member here . I bought an '85 unit with skeg intact recently for $125 on ebay. Those are complete in working condition with gears prices BTW. late 60's to late 80's inlines. They made a bazillion of them.

+1, I paid $140 for my LU on Ebay including a new looking prop. Most sellers will sell it presure tested to insure that the seals are good. You need to know shaft length, number of splines, does it have a preload pin on top, and your serial number.

Don't worry about number of splines or preload pin. All the inline 4/6 gearcases from early 70s to late 80s will fit. Most all are longshaft (20"). Some of the gear ratios on the 4 cylinder motors are 2.3::1, versus the 2::1 gear ratio you have. A prop change can help that.

Well that is cool. Because all the shops around here tell me that is not true because the mounting may be wrong. I have the long shaft and I dont remember what the spline count was on the prop. but I thought I had read somthing on here that they wee all the same ecept for the shaft length and the gear ratio. I just didnt want to buy one and then find out that it wouldn't mount to my powerhead.
I even called a few parts dealers (crowleys and Wholesale Marine) and they said that they dont make that model anymore. And why would I need my serial #? Just curious? its at 1973 model 1150 inline 6 2stroke serial # 3651012.
Oh and does it matter what size the original engine was? I see a ton of LU on ebay for cheap but they all fit differnt models.. so I just want to make sure.
I REALLY appricate the help!!!!

Pretty much all inline 4 and 6 cylinders interchange. Ratios might be different on early small 6's and 4 cylinder models but early 70's to late 80's will all bolt right up . There are a few 15 inch models to avoid but other than that you are good to go.

Re: 73 Merc Model 1150 lowerend

Well that makes me feel better. I just wonder why the boat shops say they wont? Does it matter if mine has the Metal water pump housing? And what about gear replacments? Other than mine being the straight cut spines (on the forawrd and reverse gears) as long as they are all the same that should work to eh? I am just a little worried about getting a lower end and the gears being bad in that one as well. But If it doesnt matter what model the engine, I should be able to find one. to bad too cause th4ere is one on ebay right now for an early 80's 115 horse and I have already spent my money having the lower end I have resealed and a new bearing.. 200$ and the reverse gear is almost toast... Hmm. Ticks me off Thats you guys tell me Most any will fir and the Mech's say they wont.. Why would they do that? bastages! lol Guess I'll just have to watch ebay and C.l. throught the winter and find one... Thanx Way Much for the Help!
