While I'm doing other work I figured I would change oil in foot and check the impeller. My concern....the impeller looks to be in good shape but it doesn't look like the impeller I see in parts diagrams for this motor.

The one I pulled from my motor (see pic no.1) has curved arms. While the one shown in parts diagrams and actual part which can be ordered for my motor (see pic no 2) has straight arms.

If its ok to use the one with curved arms, which way should it be sitting in the housing? If we are looking down on the water pump housing with the impeller installed should it be as in the attached picture or turned over with the opposite side up?
pic attached.

There's only one type impeller for your motor, so, you have the correct one. If you have taken off the lower unit to inspect the impeller, my suggestion is to put in a new one while you're in there. Might save you some aggrevation later on.

Re: 73 seahorse impeller pic is this the right one

after looking at it a little more closely I realized something. The impeller when inside the housing takes on the curved shape because the arms stick out further than the inner diameter of the housing. I would imagine over time the straight arms of a new impeller would take on the same curved shape I am seeing here. Assuming that I am correct then this would answer which way to put the original impeller back in, if I were to keep it.

I will await confirmation of this assumption before I proceed.

That's correct, the impeller arms will form a curve to fit the housing. You will need to bend them one at a time to get them into the housing. As you're looking at the housing (from the top side) the impeller will travel clockwise.

thanks thats what I thought. Now if i can just figure out which way the housing was facing. The screw holes will only allow me to mount it with the water pipe coming in at the front or back of foot. But the pipe doesnt come from the rear of the motor case from front or back, but rather from the side.

You can turn the copper pipe to fit the housing. Try not to pull downward on the copper pipe to much as you will have to push it back up into the grommet if you do.

The impeller (as should) would be installed flipped over, to be reused...
The impeller should be installed, with the key way , to the driveshaft.
The existing pump housing, slid down the drive shaft, should be installed COUNTER-CLOCKWISE (this allows the arms to be installed the right way).

The NEWER impeller can be installed either way when it is installed....because it's new. Still, the pump housing, should be installed the same way....

The older key way is old and should be replaced...use the newer one instead.
