'74 1150 Locks up in Reverse

I rebuilt the lower unit on this beast over the winter, because i had no reverse. Once opened up, i discoverd the shift cam was broke. I replaced with a new one and figured all would be good. Took to the lake for first test run today, and when putting into reverse, the prop shaft would seize, and motor would immediately die. Moving the gear selector forward would not release it. The only way to get the unit out of gear was to go back and spin the prop by hand (took a hard jerk to do it). Seems to be OK in forward. I tried to restart the motor, but couldn't, as it was still in reverse. I tried to move the shifter into forward as the motor was turning, but that wouldn't get it out of reverse either. Only by tilting the motor up so i could grab the prop and jerk it could i get it to unfreeze. Any suggestions?

Make sure the shift shaft is properly aligned in neutral when installing the lower. If it's not a linkage issue, than you'll need to re-insect your work in the lower for an error.

-W

does the reverse lock cam at the top of the shift shaft have anything to do with this? The manual I have says it is for non-power trim and tilt only, so i left it off when i reinstalled the lower (yes, it was on the lower when i pulled it out). Also, I believe i have a "Cam-Shift" model lower unit, and the manual says to have it in forward when removing and uninstalling the lower. Is that info wrong? it is a seloc manual.

Okeyo, the reverse cam lock is not necessary for proper shifting, so leaving it off is OK. I recommend you pull the lower unit, put it into neutral, put the control into neutral and then reinstall the LU. Before installation, move the control into forward, and watch the rotation of the rod. Now move the LU shift rod in the same direction and make sure you are in forward.
