Hey guys, I have a broken hose that looks like it comes from the trim sender through the transom and I dont know where it goes from there, since I cant see inside. Does anyone have an idea of what this might be (up or down trim maybe)? There is a light brown fluid in the bilge area and looks like the hose either broke or came loose from fitting but I cant see aynthing. Is there any way to get to this without haveing to take lower and upper unit off?

Yes the trim hoses go to the junction block outside the boat on the bottom of the transom assembly. It's the block your 4 lines are connected to that go to your trim cylinders.Remove the 2 nuts and pull the block straight down. You will see the lines inside the boat are connected to the topside of the block.Disconnect them one at a time.Tie a string to the line and pull it into the boat. Then tie the string to your new line outside of the boat and pull it in to the inside.Reconnect the new hose to the block and reinstall the block using silicone on it to seal.

mercruiser calls that a hydraulic hose connector in the service manual. i've heard it referred to as a hydraulic manifold too. anyways, there is a gasket ya can get.. http://www.marineengineparts.com/shopsite_sc/store/html/page257.html down towards the bottom of the page. that appears to be a glm part. not oem. try going to your mercruiser dealer, they may have one. i'd give ya the oem part number but i just can't seem to find it... but i know there is one because a few years ago, i bought one. the gasket only.. the dealer will know the part number...

edit, don't buy that part in the link till you confirm it's exactly the right thing, i see that it says 1978 on the title. i had to google the name of the part to find that which i ain't exactly sure is exactly what you need. it was an example of the gasket..

If you do need the gasket for the connector block/manifold the number for a 120/140 1970-77 is 27-476441 price $1.24 If the old one comes off clean a little silicone will seal it just fine.

A good idea to keep junk out of the new hose is to tape the ends real good.

WHEW! thanks guys. What type of lubricant do I put in the resevoir? Ziggy how the hell do you fill it, theres barely any room back there?

picklenjim- You saved me ALOT of time, much appreciated.

Ziggy- I am almost done with my 74 Aristocraft(interior is almost done). Unfortunately I joined the ranks of the unemployed so I really couldnt make it original but I did redo the seats and carpet. I have a few things to figure out with Trim and I think I need a new battery and hopefully I will be in the water this year. I will post some pics for ya.

jtybt- What kind of tape? electrical?

yep, kind of a bummer for room on the starboard side back there isn't it... for the fill. i use a small funnel. i got one once with a batt. i got, it's very small and is supposed to be used to fill the individual cells on a batt. but works very well for this task too. anyways, that small funnel + a small measuring cup is what i use. ya gotta go slow but it gets the deed done w/o a mess..

i look fwd. to your pics.

sorry to hear about your unemployment. your not alone i don't think. i'm self employed and biz is down a lot and making me squeal too. darn economy. sure wish something would change for the better.. i'm about out of bread to even fill the fuel tank and if i have any major problems i'm gonna be hosed and not be able to afford to do anything about it... hope i get more biz and hope you can get a new, better job...

If you haven't filled your resevoir yet the manuals call for 10w30 or 10w40 motor oil.I assume you have the metal resevoir.Right on the left side of the fill screw is a small vent screw.Remove this screw completely . Then put your funnel into the larger fill hole and fill to the top of the hole.Removing the vent screw will keep the oil from backing up in your funnel.Replace both screws when finished.

your manual must be different than mine... ;)
s/m #2 i believe for a 74. pp 7A7 under bleeding procedure, item #4. "NOTE: Keep pump reservoir filled at all times with SAE 20W ''SE'' oil."

all that said. 20w is nla best i've found. i use 10w-30... i figured it was half way in between. i've also read that in actuality, just about any engine oil or hydraulic fluid may be used also. i think later trim systems the fluid of choice is merc. hydraulic fluid of some sorts... don't mix fluid types.

interesting notion about removing the vent screw. the funnel i use is so small that the oil drains out of it slow enough i've not had air issues when filling, but that's a good thought. 75 aristocraft, don't drop them screws, they'll be hard to reach or possibly find. i put a paper towel underneath the trim pump in case i drop the screws..

I bought 20w to put in it. Should I not? Anyways I am going tomorrow to try and find a hose locally, if not off to the internet I go. I will let you know when I get it done, but it wont be this weekend since I am going with a buddy on his boat to party up on saginaw bay here in MI. Again, thx for info.

Ya my manual is #9. My trim pump actually has a sticker on it that says 20w20.However I never see 20 weight anywhere any more so I have been using 10w30 as the newer manual calls for. It's still the same pump ,metal resevoir Prestolite.Works fine and have never had a problem with it.It's been in there for 20 years now.Go ahead and use the 20w that you got,it will work just fine.
