I just got a Sea King 35hp outboard for my 1988 NMZ fiberglass boat, and when it was wired i was unable to get the engine to turn over by using the ignition, I've double checked the wiring and everything looks to be wired correctly, and i've checked the battery (even used a marine deep charge) and still have no power. I'm also unable to get the fish finder to turn on when the ignition is on.

can anyone give me any advice on what i can check to get this to crank up?

Have you checked the neutral switch? Do you have a multimeter and know how to check voltages against a wiring diagram? Is this diagram like your motor?

I checked the neutral switch when i tried, Ill check the wiring again, but mine looks to be correct, even with out being able to crank shouldnt I be getting some sort of power to the fish finder? or are these designed to only have some sort of power draw when the motor is running?

Do you have your fish finder connected to the ignition switch? Whatever, find out what's wrong with the motor first, then worry about the fish finder. Something is messed up. That's why I suggested doing some voltage checks. You should be able to find the fault very quickly.

Yes, the Fish finder is wired to the Ignition, I plan on checking the wiring in the morning, its too dark outside to go mess with it,

Update:
Got the electrical figured out, and now it will crank, but i'm running into a dead end with the throttle cable setup, no matter which way i connect them I cant seem to get the right setup to allow me to move the throttle lever more than an inch.

Is it going into forward gear?

I havent started it just yet, i hit the switch to crank it, but because the motor is not in the water i didnt want to get it fully running. The brick wall now is getting the throttle cables connected to the motor if the weather gets a bit nicer out i'll go snap a picture of what it looks like. but right now its snowing sideways outside.

The reason I asked is it probably can;t go to full throttlr unless the gearshift is fully in forward gear.

I tried every combination of pushing and pulling, in both forward and reverse, and no combination will allow it to move.

here's the Pictures as promised (now that it stopped snowing)
Right now I have both cables screwed into the holders, but the ends are not attached just in case I have them in the wrong spot. as far as I can tell the top cable is the throttle cable and the bottom is connected to the gear selector.

With the remote control handle in the neutral position, the motor end of the shift cable will be half way extended. The throttle cable will either be all the way extended or not extended, according to whether it is push-to-open or pull-to-open.

EDIT: The knob beside the control handle is to disengage the shift for starting and warmup. With main lever in neutral, pull the knob out. That disengages the shift function and the main lever will only operate the throttle. Return lever to neutral, and push the knob in and the shift will function again.l
