Hi all,
I have been trouble shooting this motor for some time now with the help of a lot of good people here. We were unable to get RPMs at WOT. This is a new to us motor. I changed out the fuel pump, ignition coils, hoses and cleaned and rebuilt the carbs with new kits. The motor continued to fall flat under load. I did not have a timing light until this morning so I could not do a link and sync. I finally got one and used Joe Reeves method for setting spark advance to WOT.
Heres what I found. The motor was firing at around 20-21 degrees at WOT. The motor is supposed to be firing at 19 degrees which would be 15 degrees using Joe's method. I was able to retard the spark advance to 15 degrees with plenty of thread left on either side.
My questions are:
1. How could the timing be that far out.
2. Would the motor still run at 25 degrees rather than 19. I am asking because I have read other posts that people have found that the flywheel has been installed improperly so that the timing grid is not in the proper place. I really hope that wasn't the case here.
3. I used and inductive timing light with no advance controls. Does this matter. I am not sure what the advance controls do. If I read 15 degrees on the plain Jane timing light, is that truly 15 degrees?
4. I was unable to find the timing spec for the motor at idle in my manual. There is a stop on the other side of travel that I could adjust. The motor seems to idle fine, but I thought I would check it anyway.

Taking her out tonight, to try again. Fingers crossed. If this is not the solution, I think I am going to have to take her in because I'm out of ideas.
Thanks for your help,
Jeff

quote from Joes directions "No need to be concerned about the idle timing as that will take care of itself. The main concern is the full advance setting."

Thanks, missed that in the guide. Any comments on my other questions? Otherwise, I'll post results tomorrow.

Just thought of something else. While troubleshooting, we decided to tilt the motor up higher. No electric tilt/trim. Is it possible that because the floats are not parallel anymore that we are flooding the carbs?

they would be lever when you lowered, but tilting high, will flood the motor.
