I did my own reseal on my 25 hp 1974 Evinrude long shaft model no:
25403M by myself and it actually worked. No more water in it now.
Now, it jumped out of gear last weekend, and this weekend it gave up for good. Clutch dog is shot, drive pin in 3 pieces, and it seems that all my gears have extra wear and tear I just did not notice the first time I had it apart.
I have located a new clutch dog, (after finding my number had been superceded by another, finally), but on Ebay is a gear set that looks identical, but is claimed to be from a 1971 motor.
Finally, my question:
Will these parts interchange with my '74 version?
Every website for parts I've checked has somewhat "varied" listings for what fits what year. The auction ends in less than 2 days... I sure would appreciate a confirmation "yea or nay" on this...
Thanks in advance...I couldn't have gained the confidence to do what I've already done on my motor with out this forum!

Check the model number for the 71.

Assuming it is a 25 hp as well, model number 25103S or 25102S the dog is the same. I would be wary about buying used dogs though, especially online where wear and rounding of the machined edges is hard to see, or is this a new part?

Re: '74 Evinrude Gearcase Quandary

The parts are stated as coming from a 1971 20 hp used lower unit that had a defective power head.
He states the parts will fit 18-20-25 hp up to 1973.
Maybe things are different in 1974. That's why I'm in a spot on this. My motor looks to have many, many hours on it. It needs some TLC badly, but it runs like a top! It has more power than I need and will idle down to "tick over" trolling speed! It's on 60's era Monarch 14' deep vee that is very heavily built and stout. I love it as it is a very dry boat in rough water.
I only have $400 in this whole rig, and would rather get a new motor than spend too much on this one.
There also is a complete lower unit on Ebay that looks identical to mine except there is no description of what year, just that it came off a 25 hp.
It is a short shaft, but I'm thinking I can use my driveshaft and shifter rod in the replacement unit.
I looked closely at my existing gears last night...they are in pretty bad shape.
Thanks for your reply...any advice is appreciated.
