just joined forum read a lot of helpful stuff --so i figure i might find answers here

tilt and trim unit moves very slowly then stops you can here the electric motor stop -if you move switch to opposite position (eg up) then back down then the motor will engage and start lowering unit again (or up depending on application) took it to local evinrude dealer he looked at it (had boat for like 4 hrs -this included changing bottom end oil- plugs /timing(tuneup) and well test) ---- he said tilt and trim pump valves gummed up --trim motor ok --and rebuild kit not available --after some research i found it is available and part numbers match to many other mid 80's trim units

my question is has anyone else had similiar problem --if so --what was the fix or does anyone else have an idea to repair --sorry to say i am not 100% convinced or trusting of local dealer or his mechanics

Re: 74 evinrude tilt and trim questions

The problem does sound like an internal blockage as he stated. A pressure test will be needed to pinpoint the problem. You could try draining the fluid, re filling with new, then bleeding the system to see if that solves your problem, you may get lucky.

I would reccomend getting yourself an OEM Service manual. It will guide you with changing the lower unit oil, plugs, timing, etc... that you paid him to do for you. Which by the way is all fairly easy once you have the know how. This forum is also here to guide you with plenty of good guys that are always willing to help.

i already replaced and purged the system of air myself and got a manual as you mentioned

i was thinking maybe (if its possible) of removing the pump and cleaning with carb or brake cleaner if this would solve the problem or should i just bite the bullet and order a new valve body

I would definately break the unit down before ordering any new parts. If the motor is indeed good and you dont have an internal leak, the unit may just need to be cleaned.

Could you post a pic of your trim unit?
