Recently bought boat and motor and obviously something is broken here. I do not have power tilt/trim. Can anyone fill me in on what has happened here and is it ok to run the motor as is?

Not sure if this pic is any help - it's from a '74 Johnson 85.

I think it just folds up to lock the engine up for towing.

You are missing the rest of the trail lock arm assembly. 386684. When you tilt the engine up, this arm supports the weight of the engine to hold it in the up position. You may be able to special order one from Bombardier, about $50. There are a few dealer in the US that still have new stock on this part. A block of wood also works.

it's fine to run it like that. in reverse it might pop up on you if you are giving it too much gas.

it is used only for towing and if it pops up in revers then your revers lock doesn't work i would not worry

Thanks guys. Broke down and bought the owners manual. It's called the 'Trailering Lock Arm' - provided to secure motor in partial tilt position for trailering. The standard lenght models didn't have one but the long shafts did. Kind of like a built in transom saver the way I see it.
