Re: 74 evinrude

In another post, you say this is a 9.9 hp. Just as a note, it's always better to post all your info in one thread.

When you say it "misses" every five seconds or so, do you mean that the engine jerks? Is there a fairly loud noise or bang when this happens? Or does the power just drop off?

So, does the engine cut off completely, then immediately pick back up or does it run poorly, then pick back up?

"Miss" is a word that means different things to different people. If you can describe exactly what happens when this occurs, it will help a lot.

I'm sorry, but you still haven't described what the thing does. Does it cut out completely, or just run badly?

Don't be afraid to use words to describe the problem. They're free.

There is a hard thump maybe but it sounds like its coming from below where parts may be worn. I have not had the cover off when it does this, afraid of losing parts.

OK, a hard thump. You didn't mention that. That's different from a miss. It's very likely that you have a worn-out clutch dog in your gear case. Since this only happens at wide-open-throttle, and there's a hard thump, that's the most likely thing.

An electrical miss that comes and goes could be a shorted wire or a bad connection, but it wouldn't make a thumping sound.

A carburetion miss would not make a thumping sound, either.

If this only happens when you're at full throttle or close to it, then my money's on the worn clutch dog. Replacing it will require disassembling the gearcase. When you do that, you'll want to change all the seals in the lower unit, so the lower unit will have to come off the engine.

You'll need the manual for your outboard, for sure. If you're not comfortable doing this work, then have it done at a shop.
